I’ll take “things people who don’t understand clinical depression say” for $500,Alec.
hmmm interesting theory considering how I’m on 40 mg of Prozac daily & see a therapist regularly bcuz I’m actively suicidal the majority of the time but sure, go ahead & be a dick on my light hearted post about something small u can do to momentarily relieve some of the crushing burden on ur life lol
Do people realize part of the treatment for depression is doing things to try and make yourself happy? A bottle of pills alone isn’t going to help you. People bash people telling others to go out and exercise when they are depressed but that is actually something a therapist with encourage you to do because it is a proven method to help you. Tea and massages can help. Spending time with loved ones can help. Doing yoga can help. Eating healthier can help. Are they individually a cure? No, but they can help because they help keep your body regulated/help release hormones and other chemicals that can make your body feel better. Relying solely on a pill bottle is dangerous, because your blood chemistry and hormone levels can change and the pills can become less effective. Do these methods always work? No, but trying them is a hell of a lot better than giving up and letting your depression consume you.
Btw, this is coming from someone who has been depressed. Admittedly not suicidal but to the point where crying at least once a day for a while was expected. And you’d be surprised how much going for a swim and a hot bath afterwards could help. Or spending the night watching movies with friends. Or getting more than six hours of sleep. These things aren’t cure alls, but little joys give life meaning.
Coming from someone who has been suicidal, I support every part of strawbebehmod’s response too. Trying a bunch of small things and seeing what makes you feel better builds agency to keep working towards the bigger things. And if sticking your head out a window doesn’t help today, that’s just data for next time so you can try something else out. Maybe you try yoga and it doesn’t work, but then your friend takes you rock climbing and it gives you energy for the rest of the day. Maybe you try the warm bath idea and it doesn’t help, but then you take a super hot shower and it calms you down. Maybe going for a walk in a park helps on one day and then on another day it doesn’t, so you go to Target or the pet store or something. It’s all just data so you can learn what helps and what doesn’t so you feel more confident to take the bigger steps too. You repeat it until it’s less of a performance and more of a habit, and then you keep repeating it until the habit just becomes a new mindset.
