You know of me all I can bear to be known.

“It was not credible that he didn’t have a story. There’s a hint that wherever he comes from is pretty dark. It felt right to not put words to it. It was so awful, it was something he couldn’t speak about. That that’s all you need to know.”

“Wherever he left Flint, there’s always going to be a sentimentality there. There’s always going to be guilt. There’s going to be a constant reasoning with himself whether or not he did the right thing. They were closer to one another than any two other people in the world. So I do like the idea that if he came across a parrot that just, you know, HATED him–just hated him. Found him when he’s working as a cook. So Silver starts to feed it. And when the parrot turns around and starts coming to Silver for food, he’ll be like–‘Ah. That’s Flint.’ The point is that he meets a creature that could not have had more disdain for him if it tried, and that very same animal comes to eventually rely on him. That’s when the parrot gets its name. ‘You remind me of my old friend.’ I don’t see it as derogatory or taking the piss, you know? Even in the book, for me, the joke rang of something more profound than that.”

“When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? Perhaps to be too practical is madness. To surrender dreams — this may be madness. Too much sanity may be madness — and maddest of all: to see life as it is, and not as it should be!”

“The great thing about Flint–one of the great things about him–is his pragmatism. He doesn’t care as long as it’s useful to him. He has no ego about being liked or being preferred or having power. It’s just ‘I have this target, I have this goal, and if that helps me achieve it, that’s good enough for me.’ And I think he finds a partnership in Silver, eventually. Flint always needs somebody to be his alter ego. To be a part of his plan. He always needs someone to confide in. And after Miranda, he’s lost. Until he finds Silver. And he actually realizes that Silver is probably the one he needed most of all. That’s not such a good thing for either of them. But that’s the way it is.”

And here I sit at the head of an army of men, each of whom, present company included, has probably at some point considered killing the man he now fights alongside, each of whom, present company included, has certainly considered killing me.
