English has alternating stress patterns that indicate whether related words are nouns (first syllable stressed) or verbs (second syllable stressed):

Noun: récord
Verb: recórd

(x)

My fucking god!! This is why English does the thing!!!!

contract

contract

FINALLY IT MAKES SENSE

it’s the most subtle difference but it’s beautiful.

This is why English should be written with accents.

my mind is blown

As a native english speaker i didnt realise this shit and spent the past 5 minutes trying to work out what the difference was

Since November, more than two dozen women - of all ages, but mostly in their twenties - had approached me in restaurants, theaters, and stores to apologize for not voting or for not doing more to help my campaign. I responded with forced smiles and tight nods. On one occasion, an older woman dragged her adult daughter over by the arm to come talk to me and ordered her to apologize for not voting - which she did, head bowed in contrition. I wanted to stare right in her eyes and say ‘You didn’t vote? How could you note vote?! You abdicated your responsibility as a citizen at the worst possible time! And now you want *me* to make *you* feel better?’ Of course I didn’t say any of that. These people were looking for absolution that I just couldn’t give. We all have to live with the consequences of our decisions.

Hillary Rodham Clinton, “What Happened”

You can tell how much guilt people feel by how mad they are at this.

DRAG THEM HILLARY

I voted for Hillary, and would have gladly seen her in office over Trump, but this is pathetic. People came to apologize to you for not doing more and rather than accept an apology for what it is, you internally judge them and then shame them in your book. You lost, and not because of these two dozen women. There were many factors working against you, in the media and otherwise, but your mismanaged campaign had more to do with your loss than these few women who had the decency to apologize for not doing more.

Don’t apologize to her. Apologize to the scores of LGBT people who are having their rights taken away, the black people who are being told that their lives don’t matter, the hispanic people who are being threatened with expulsion from this very country. Apologize to the people yet to come, who will have to deal with the laws and rulings that will be passed into law by the branches of government that THEY gave to them

The forgiveness isn’t hers alone to give. They failed everyone during the one time it truly mattered

They made their choice, but now we all have to live with the consequences

This is actually a great passage in the book. She’s not internally judging people. People kept looking to her for emotional support at the lowest point of her life, people who didn’t vote, who thought she was more evil than Trump, who thought there was no way Trump would win so voted third party…they were looking to her to make them feel less scared or for absolution. And she couldn’t do that emotional work for them.

She talks about FRIENDS who called her to comfort her who she had to end up comforting. She talks about how hard and exhausting it was.

I don’t want to hear from my friends who voted third party who are now scared. I told them what to do during the election, they didn’t do it because they “couldn’t” vote for Hillary. Fuck off. I’m not going to make them feel better for their bad behavior. And Hillary shouldn’t either.

Neither should LGBTQ. Or PoC. Or Muslims.

Stop asking the people you hurt to give you absolution, to do the emotional work for you. Start doing the work. Start showing up to try to change the effect of your shitty options.
