https://ift.tt/2Ky5uCaEU sends controversial internet copyright reforms back to the drawing board:
eatingcroutons:
HELL YEAH GUYS 318 VOTES TO 278 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
The fight isn’t over though.
Although this form of the legislation has been rejected, the Parliament is planning to revise it in September, so we need to keep making our voices heard.
Here’s what you can do now:
Find out who your MEPs are on the European Parliament website (search by country and constituency)
Go to VoteWatch EU to find out which way your MEPs voted (if the site is down check back later – it’s getting a lot of traffic right now!)
Edited to add: This Tweet also shows which MEPs voted which way
Contact your MEPs to thank them for voting to reject the legislation, or to express your disappointment if they voted in favour of it. (Every MEP’s email address is on their page on the European Parliament website.)
Not sure what this is all about?
Basically, new copyright laws have been proposed in Europe and two of them – Article 13 and Article 11 – are considered by most people to be Very Bad For The Internet.
Here’s a post I made about why Article 13′s proposed upload filters would be terrible for fanfic sites in particular.
Article 11 is less relevant to fandom, but still terrible – if it had passed it would have become illegal to display the headline in the link at the top of this post, without first getting permission from The Verge.
Here’s more detailed information from the Electronic Frontier Foundation about what these laws would mean if they passed.
