The Cottingley Fairies.

In 1920 a series of photos of fairies captured the attention of the world. The photos had been taken by two young girls, the cousins Frances Griffith and Elsie Wright, while playing in the garden of Elsie’s Cottingley village home. Photographic experts examined the pictures and declared them genuine. Spiritualists promoted them as proof of the existence of supernatural creatures, and despite criticism by skeptics, the pictures became among the most widely recognized photos in the world. It was only decades later, in the late 1970s, that the photos were definitively debunked.
Shown above are the five Cottingley fairy photos, in the order in which they were taken. In the early 1980s Elsie and Frances admitted that the photographs were faked, using cardboard cutouts of fairies copied from a popular children’s book of the time, but Frances maintained that the fifth and final photograph was genuine.

real reasons bisexual women are more likely to end up in long-term relationships with men:

huge amounts of societal pressure to be heterosexual or at least hetero passing

rewards, both legal and social, of heterosexual marriage

fear of coming out as bisexual, except in anonymous self-reporting studies

fear of accidentally flirting with straight women because of the stereotypes concerning being gay and predatory behaviours

disappointment/resignation after a life full of unreciprocated crushes on straight women

negative opinions about bisexuals making it difficult to find partners within the LGBTQ community

not a reason bisexual women are more likely to end up in long-term relationships with men:

bisexuality isn’t a real orientation and we’re all secretly faking it

um, how statistically there are more straight men than wlw/it is easier to meet straight men than wlw especially in non-urban areas.

okay but what if angels are black holes and halos are just the light warping around them being pulled in by gravity

paronomaniac said: Then receiving a visit from one is extra terrifying.

pugletto said: oooh… story fodder

elaienar said: That’s terrifying and I approve 100%.

WELL HERE IS THE THING, RIGHT? black holes you basically literally have to be in their gravity like pretty much on top of them to be sucked in. so that’s not really an issue. it’s TERRIFYING sure, but explains a few things which I will list:

my astronomy teacher said if you were somehow able to survive entering a black hole and reached the bottom or singularity, the way time works is that you would be able to see the entire universe laid out - like you’d know when the universe ended if you looked back outwards

which falls into line with the idea that the angels know all of time and everything except when it will all end precisely (or scientifically, the collapse of this universe is unknown, but supposing angels were black holes they would see until this unknown point)

matter falling into a black hole creates a disc of light which is probably among the literal BRIGHTEST things in the universe

there are angels which are supposed to be the wheels of God’s Chariot, so it would make sense if, according to theories, that there ARE massive blackholes at the center of all galaxies which is what cause them to rotate, and those black holes are angels which make the galaxy spin.

black holes were formed sometime after the big bang, which lines into the story of creation, that the angels came after the universe.

angels can choose to physically manifest like humans, but aren’t actually. it’s said that you cannot survive looking at them or hearing them directly. NASA says that the “note” a black hole emits is the deepest sound found in the universe. i am just guessing here but you would probably die if you heard it up close instead of a bazillion light years away. ALSO side note cool fact apparently that “note”: “…It’s worth pointing out that the “sound” in question is 57 octaves (and one semitone) below middle C, which makes it 247×2−57≈1.71×10−15Hz, or one whole cycle every 18.5 million years.” CRAZY RIGHT although apparently some sing other notes and basically if there’s anything people know about angels it is that they DEFINITELY SING. anyways you can’t see black holes but you can see the things around them and the soundwaves surrounding them.

also apparently scientists picked up a death “scream” of a star falling into a black hole but like…

anyways literally every angel is terrifying BE NOT AFRAID “haha okay but i’m crying though is that cool”

black holes are probably angels. i’m just saying.

I will never not reblog this.

Did I post this already? I don’t care. I’m posting it again. I’ll post it every day for every time I see someone say “You should check out Jill Stein!” or “Jill Stein is the new left!” or “I’m voting for Jill Stein because I am voting my conscience!” because I will know that that person has not actually read or understood anything about the way the world actually works and probably lives in a field somewhere surrounded by imaginary butterflies.

I suppose many people who adore Jill Stein will not bother to read through this whole thing and stick with their good ol’ reliable jpgs promising free college, student loan debt forgiveness, no more war!, and a fully green platform. The thing is, those are the people who really should step back for a minute and look at Jill Stein’s policies from an outside perspective.

Jill Stein has no idea what she’s talking about.

This is, of course, my opinion. However, this is also something that should be immediately obvious to anyone who reads her policy plans or reads/listens to an interview with her, or watches her incoherently ramble about wi-fi being dangerous for children. Her statements on politics are little more than pandering to the lowest common denominator, frequently muddling ideas so as to appease one crowd without alienating the other – hence the endless back and forth on whether or not she is pro- or anti-vaxx.

And yes, yes, I know she’s come out and said she supports vaccinations, however, there is a huge difference between definitively saying “Vaccinate your kids” and “Well, vaccines are okay, but…” The latter is what she actually said, and keeps saying. As a medical doctor.

One of these things is having a stance based on true, scientific fact and study. The other is pandering and fanning the flame of a theory and movement that has been debunked and is also a public health hazard. Additionally, the objection she raises to vaccinations is that they’re overseen by big pharma (aka. evil), which is false. There are two committee members, out of fifteen, who are from the pharmaceutical industry. The rest are, as stated in the advisory committee info page, from various medically related fields. This is not difficult information to look up. And yet, as noted here, she’s referred to autism as an “epidemic” and “a public health calamity” but said nothing about the outbreaks of diseases that, up until the anti-vaxx movement, had been a rare occurrence for years. Here’s a good collection of the many (many) “yes, but” statements Jill Stein has made on vaccinations.

Jill Stein’s foreign and defense policy ideas show that she has very little understanding of such policies (which is actually frightening). In the same way that Donald Trump plays on the politics of fear mongering, Jill Stein plays on the politics of peace promising. It’s a nice dream, but it’s not a realistic one. Raise your hand if you believe that just because we suddenly decide to shut down 700+ military bases, de-militarize our borders, cut defense spending by 50% [source], and oh also, maybe pull out of NATO, those that are hostile toward the U.S. will suddenly look around and go “huh… well… I guess we should go home now. Call it a day, guys.”

Look, I’m not for war and I never have been or will be… but this is stereotype-level hippie nonsense. Nothing works this way. If you think it does, please slap yourself in the face until you wake up to reality.

On top of it being unrealistic, it would likely be shot down by any Congress she would face, as would most of her proposals, as there is no Green in Congress, and she would have minimal support.

Even her understanding of world politics is minute and wavering, at best. The Brexit vote is one example, where, using her own website as a source, she was quoted as having called the vote to leave a victory, and suggesting it was time to capitalize on its momentum, only to change the message after realizing the U.S. response, especially from progressives, was much more in favor of remaining (likely due to the actual impact and motivations behind the movement see: pandering). She’s since changed the post on her own website, however, the original was captured for posterity.

Her plan to forgive student loan debt raises skepticism that she’s not addressed – there is a good call out in her Reddit AMA that discussed this, which was never followed up. Quantitative easing has been, so far, her only explanation for how she’d forgive student debt and there’s been no actual proof that such a thing is possible or would work.

In fact, and granted, it’s due to the fact that she has no chance and nobody cares, there has been little to no fact checking at all on anything Jill Stein says, which is why I can’t help it that my eyes roll so far back into my head whenever someone sings her praises.

Jill Stein is an opportunistic hack who has never held any political office higher than Representative at a Town Hall meeting. Her political experience includes two failed runs for Governor of Massachusetts and one failed run for President — two, if you count 2016. She has been trying for years and that is as far as she has gotten. Her talking points are often muddled and indecipherable because, again, she has no idea what she’s talking about. She is about as qualified as Donald Trump.

If you would not vote for Donald Trump, you should not vote for Jill Stein. President of the United States is not a learn on the job position. You need to be qualified. You need to be extremely qualified. That means you need to have, at minimum (and that’s pushing it), a base understanding of world affairs, working with our foreign allies and adversaries, domestic affairs, and hopefully, the actionability of your proposed plans for the country’s immediate future. Nowhere in any interviews or outlines Jill Stein has presented has she demonstrated any of this.

If you truly, truly care about your progressive movement and building a formidable third party, then build it. There are one hundred seats in the Senate. There zero Green Party members. There are 435 seats in the House. There zero Green Party members. That list goes on for a while.

Get rid of this woman, who has been trying and failing for years, because she cannot be taken seriously. Work on building up local government seats. Get your numbers up. Get your visibility up. Get into the House. Get into the Senate. Get a Governor elected, man. Stop showing up every four to eight years and acting like you give a shit.

Because that is the problem people have with the Greens (and third parties in general). Where are they right up until a Presidential election, when they suddenly decide to run some spoiler that has no shot at winning, but can ruin the next four to eight years for more than half the country? If the Greens want to be taken seriously, they need to do the hard work of actually organizing and building a solid foundation. The constant attempt to take from the top down is ridiculous.

And for the first-timers, who don’t understand that this has happened before, please, understand: This has happened before. You are not the first, but you can be the last if you try to make a positive change rather than perpetuating the spoiler cycle. You can focus your efforts on organization, lower elections, strong candidates, and growing your party to the point where you’re actually ready to take the larger step. You can make that effort. That would be progressive.

The Green Party is also explicitly anti-sex-work.

morally bankrupt piece of shit people being really into very innocent/”pure” shows/video games/books/comics/movies/etc

(^^^I know what she’s asking and why, and it’s not the same type of moral bankruptcy people are currently accusing us here in our little fandom.  But the question does pervade judgments about everything from the Marauders and Severus Snape to those Morality Police re: fan fiction.)
I think the short answer is youthful ignorance and indignance.

THIS IS THE UMBRIDGE EFFECT. I don’t have time to hunt down the original post about this bc I’m out the door to work, but this phenomenon has been discussed at length about how often times ppl who insist of innocence and wholesomeness and what have you in their media are actually horrible, horrible ppl themselves–Umbridge with her obsession with pink and kittens and all things kawaii. Someone who is more Tumblr savvy and also not on mobile hunt down the appropriate discourse and reblog this please?

okay so i’m back from work and on desktop now. I do believe this this the original post I was thinking of, from when I saw it a few months ago in connection with the attempted suicide of an SU fan artist.

I will bring attention specifically to the contributions of @harveyjames and @vikingcarrot as they explain the “Umbridge Phenomenon” that the OP addresses.

from @harveyjames:

“In comics and animation, I’ve noticed something I call the “Dolores Umbridge Paradox”. That is, the people who’re obsessed with sick, gross, dark humour tend to be the biggest sweethearts in real life. The people who only want to see cute, innocent characters getting up to cute, innocent stuff usually turn out to be the nastiest, most vindictive shitheads. Maybe your experience has been different, but it’s something I’ve found to be generally true.”

from @vikingcarrot:

“I echo the thoughts of @harveyjames RE their ‘Dolores Umbridge Paradox’. Way back in the HP fandom, the sweetest, most generous, and most actively helpful people in the community were all into the darkest, grossest shit. Every single one of them. They reveled in fic and art about violence, torture, rape, incest, and yes, underaged, sometimes very extreme stuff. The kind of stuff where you would not dream of even admitting on Tumblr that you’re friends with a person who is into that sort of thing in fiction (note I am specifying fiction, not reality). Not a single one of them was a bad person, none of them were closet paedophiles, none of them were secretly burning to murder, and most importantly, not a single goddamn one of them would ever have jumped on top of anyone else for indulging in a kink or type of fic/art they thought was inappropriate or problematic, and spewed so much bile over minor and imagined offences.

As it turned out, the majority of this one social circle in particular that I was part of  which was entirely female, were victims of sexual abuse themselves, either as children or teens (and I was too). I don’t believe that was necessarily the reason they had dark fictional interests, but I want to emphasise just how many of them were survivors because they were people who knew an awful lot about real actual trauma, and how far removed from that reality anything produced for fandom is. These days, I imagine every single one of them is extremely quiet about it or has divorced themselves from almost all fandom participation entirely, because they value their social life - online and off - and also their mental health.

It was always the vanilla folks into Nice Things Only who were the ones screaming and flailing and offended all the time, throwing constant petty, entitled attacks at others for their ships, their kinks, their gender/race/identity headcanons.

I am perpetually aghast at how entitled people on Tumblr are - and Twitter, and every other current social media - when they come across anything that makes them feel remotely uncomfortable or offended. Discomfort and hurt feelings - even hurt feelings stemming from issues that are genuine, real, damaging social problems - do not entitle anyone to harass, scream at, threaten, suicide-bait and publicly humiliate another person for having what is, in fact, harmless fun with fiction.”

Personally, I speculate that the Umbridge Paradox is also closely linked to the phenomenon of cognitive dissonance–people being so entrenched in a black/white morality that reality literally bends in their perception to accommodate their views. I think, deep down, people like Dolores Umbrdige know exactly what they are doing and why it is wrong, but they are compelled by the need to see and present themselves as a good person. So that’s what they project. Umbridge’s office is full of kittens to project an air of wholesomeness and innocence, to persuade both herself and everyone else that because she enjoys these things she is a good person.

A person like this, who finds any kind of darkness in media squicky, is quick to judge anyone who enjoys or identifying with darkness as a bad person. This is because they are incapable of mustering sufficient empathy to parse out why darkness or pain might resonate with another person for any reason other than that person is themselves dark, and darkness is always bad.

Same thing goes with romanticizing of villains and truly horrible characters, as I have discussed at length before.

the best part about stranger things is that they can’t solve anything until they put the three groups together because each group is acting within a separate genre

mike, lucas, dustin, and el are in a weird sci-fi coming of age story where the group of plucky misfit kids solve the mystery and test their friendship along the way

nancy and jonathan are in a horror movie where the teenagers have to kill the monster set against a backdrop of high school drama and romance

joyce and hopper are in a conspiracy thriller where the adults have to figure out what shady stuff the government is up to while also dealing with the difficulties of their personal lives

they all approach the issue within the confines of their genre, but none of those approaches work because none of them are seeing the whole picture. it’s only when all the threads start to converge that they can actually get anything done.

people always talk about how capitalism is so innovative, but conveniently leaves out that the innovation is only for the sake of profitthey never mention that when the prosperity of the entire population isn’t profitable, everyone but the ruling class is left to die

do any of you guys have any understanding of science?!? like none of these technologies are efficient on a big scale and they have detrimental effects on the environment?!?

For real though, I do understand the science as well as the politics and that last comment is total bullshit. Green energy is as efficient on a large scale as using fossil fuels. And oh yeah, fossil fuels are absolute shit for the environment. Comparing them to available green energy technology, they’re worse by many many orders of magnitude.

The economic difference is that fossil fuels are given massive tax subsidies by the government which they do not need. Green energy competes at an artificial disadvantage.

If the government diverted the funds lost to those ridiculous tax subsidies and diverted them to green energy, you’d see one of the most massive infrastructure ramp ups in history. It would be a huge jolt to the economy.

The ramp up would also signal that green energy can now compete fairly and so massive amounts of private investment would start pouring into research and development.

Let oil trade at market price without the tax subsidies and the world would begin a tectonic change overnight.

“Innovation only for the sake of profit.”

Too true. As long as resources and production are controlled by exclusive individuals, and not socially-controlled democratically by all who use them, profit will be the driving force in economics. We need to overcome that by focusing on meeting needs and expanding democracy.

If you’re not from Australia you probably haven’t heard this but it’s very important.

Today The Guardian released a cache of files called The Nauru Files.

This contains 2,000 reports from Australia’s detention centres which detail the abuse, self harm, mental illness and many terrible things that are happening to asylum seekers who come to Australia in hope of a better life but are instead detained offshore in conditions that violate human rights.

If you do read them, even shortened versions, prepare to be disgusted and shocked.

This is physical evidence that the Australian government is sitting back while they detain children and imprison asylum seekers while subjecting them to torturous conditions and every kind of abuse.

Don’t let The Nauru Files be forgotten or covered up.

Don’t let the people in Australia’s offshore detention’s centre be forgotten.

It’s illegal here to even speak about what happens on these islands so that another country has been able to get these should really help raise these issues amongst the general public.

These files were leaked by someone involved in the system at Nauru (like, ofc) to the Guardian and since then, multiple doctors social workers etc have said “yeah we know but we couldn’t tell you” because it’s i l l e g a l for them to do so. All crimes that take place there are considered matters for the local police, so the Aus govt is washing their hands of it and saying “these are just allegations” like … The reports are horrible but this deserves a lot of attention there are 49 children in detention on Nauru living in squalor being tortured right this second
