Beyond the horrors that would occur against Muslims, mexicans, black people, jewish people, in the USA…

It effects Canada directly. The USA is Canada’s largest trading partner. If Trump fucks up his economy, its going to fuck up Canada’s economy. Trump has also been very protectionist in his rhetoric, which will obviously hurt Canada’s trade.

The US is one of the largest emitters of Greenhouse gases. Trump plans to leave the Paris Climate Change accord and disinvest hundreds of millions to billions of dollars in funding for climate research and energy efficiency.

The earth is a connected system, and if Trump ends up pushing the world towards a runaway climate, its going to effect every single person on earth.

I didn’t even mention:

-The Prospect of Donald Trump with Nuclear Weapons and command over the largest military on earth.

-The risks that LGBTQ people will face, especially as potential VP Pence is a proponent of Conversion Therapy and other homophobic and transphobic laws.

-The Supreme Court could be stacked with Republicans, ensuring a strong bias will rule in their favour for decades.

This is how it is: Trump gets sworn in January 20th. We’ve still got 2.5-ish months under the Obama Administration. Between now and then there’s the chance to make a media circus out of Donald Trump’s upcoming sexual assault trial, creating more friction between him and his party, giving us at least a little breathing room in congress. He’s appointing three new judges this term, so checks and balances (which weren’t really adjusted well for a two-party system) won’t be in good working condition for the Democrats (which counts third-party and non-voters and basically any minority because welcome to reality).

So first thing: fight for that media circus. House reps will do ANYTHING for reelection. Friction within the party will force them to pick sides.

Second thing: VOTE IN 2018. Mid-term elections are a thing. ALL 435 SEATS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES WILL BE CONTESTED. Go out and VOTE. We can win back the house. That’s one victory we sorely need. 33/100 SEATS OF SENATE WILL BE CONTESTED. We can win that back, too. 38 GOVERNORSHIPS WILL BE CONTESTED. If your county’s red, time to turn that around. VOTE ON NOVEMBER 6TH, 2018.

Write your Representatives: This is probably not the strongest option seeing as many of these guys know that they didn’t get fucking voted out this time. But hopefully knowing they have eyes on their backs will make them pause before they vote through bigoted stuff.

It’s best, if you can, to write actual, physical letters. They are more of a pain in the ass to political staff– you have to open them, read them, and digitize them, rather than emails which can generally be clicked and saved and ignored. Write a ton of letters. Organize a write in if you can. Flood offices.

Here’s a sample letter:

Dear [name];

I’m calling on you, as a voter and a citizen, to do all in your power to block anti-immigration, anti-LGBT, racist, sexist, and xenophobic laws that might be put into pass by our future government. President Elect Donald J Trump did not win my vote, and did not win the popular vote: he was not voted in by a majority of Americans. My friends and my family will be directly affected by the results of this election and it is up to you to ensure that America remains diverse and accepting. Know that we will be watching your actions in these coming years and we will take action.

This presidency will have ramifications that will last 30 years, and I ask you consider that, as you consider the sway of the electorate in the next four years as well.

You saying you’ve lost faith in “humanity” isn’t worth shit. It doesn’t challenge anything, it doesn’t mean anything. Statements like this evaporate the very nature of oppression and dissolve who is oppressor/beneficiary and who is oppressed. The continuous occurrence of black people being killed by white police isn’t some ubiquitous urgency for which all of “humanity” is at fault. You don’t get to dismiss the amazing work of my elders and the youth of my community because you lost faith. If we don’t have hope, we have nothing. No praxis. Angela Davis has spoken on this topic many times before. About how those who discuss the world as a perpetually stagnant place and throw their hands in defeat are counteractive to any revolutionary thought.

One of her most relevant quotes. “You have to act as if it were possible to radically transform the world. And you have to do it all the time.”

Do I have “faith” in the system? Absolutely not. But I do have faith in the resilience of my people and all oppressed people by Empire, whether we’re talking Pakistan, Mexico, the Congo, Somalia, Palestine, Iraq and beyond. I have faith in the abundance in domestic and transnational solidarity, coalition building and activism that comes from tragedies and injustice. And yes, these are the positives amongst “humanity” which you collectively condemn.

Which leads into my final point, whether or nor you realize it, you mean white people. And your equivalence of white people with “humanity” is actually pretty fucking racist and legitimatizes the dehumanization of everyone who isn’t white, especially black people in this context, which ironically, is how we’re at the point of a black man can get killed on camera and a grand jury in majority decides his life isn’t even worth a trial.
