Personages in the History of English Magic from the Twelfth to Nineteenth Centuries: Stephen Black (1769-1817?)
Born at sea to a slave who died in labour, Stephen Black was christened, raised, and educated at the behest of Sir William Pole, and remained in the Pole house for some tenure with the next two generations of Poles. At the beginning of the Revival of English magic he was butler to Sir Walter Pole and respected head of the household servants at his employer’s residence in Harley-street. Despite the prestige granted to him domestically, in the public sphere he was seldom recognized for his own worth (though in wit and character it is known on good authority he was at least as good as Sir Walter, if not moreso) and haunted by the prejudices others held for his skin.
In 1807, when Miss Emma Wintertowne was revived by magic and married Sir Walter, Stephen had the misfortune of attracting the attention of a gentleman with thistle-down hair, whose meddling in both his and Lady Pole’s life we have come to learn were the source of nearly all the mischief of the next ten years (excluding the wars with the French, which remain the fault of that quarrelsome nation and the hubris of Buonaparte). This mysterious gentleman had the notion that he could crown Stephen King of England, and employed nefarious schemes to do so–all of which were thwarted. But at last, he may have got his wish; during the Final Crisis of the Revival, it is said Stephen was imbued with a great deal of power, killed the gentleman with thistle-down hair, and began to walk until–by some magic–he was no longer in England, nor indeed anywhere in the world known to us.1
